What is MedHack: AI Hospital?

MedHack: AI Hospital aims to bridge the gap between healthcare and artificial intelligence. With professionals from medicine, data science, and AI development all under one roof, we’re reimagining how patient care is delivered and managed.

The goal is simple yet ambitious: leverage cutting-edge technology to solve pressing real-world healthcare challenges.

By working closely with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and industry mentors, participants will create AI-driven solutions that improve patient monitoring, streamline hospital workflows, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes. Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned AI expert, this hackathon is your chance to contribute to the future of healthcare innovation.

For All Skill Levels

Beginner Track

Beginner Track:

If you’re new to AI or just starting your journey in data science, the beginner track provides a clear, guided challenge. You’ll receive continuous patient vitals data—such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation—from simulated patients. Your task? Build a simple AI model that can monitor these vitals in real-time and alert healthcare staff when something looks abnormal. Don’t worry if it’s your first time—our workshops and mentors will help you along the way.

Advanced Track

Advanced Track

For the more experienced participants, the advanced track offers a chance to tackle complex, real-world healthcare issues. You’ll get access to real, de-identified Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data and work closely with healthcare mentors. Through interviews and guided discussions, you’ll identify critical bottlenecks or challenges in the healthcare system and develop an AI-driven solution—be it a diagnostic tool, a predictive model, or a workflow automation system. The advanced track is all about pushing boundaries and exploring what’s possible in data-rich, multi-faceted medical environments.

Tips and tricks

Get Organised

Get Organized Early:

Attend the pre-hack team formation events to meet potential teammates and clarify your track choice.

Use the Resources Provided:

Beginner-friendly workshops will run during the hackathon; advanced participants can consult with senior mentors and healthcare professionals.

Communicate Often:

Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Healthcare mentors can guide you through the medical aspects while AI mentors help with the tech side.

Focus on the Problem:

Aim for a minimal viable solution first. Even a simple alert system that works reliably can impress the judges.

Time Management:

The hackathon is intense. Prioritize essential features over perfection.

Frequently asked questions

Have a different question and can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Reach out to our support team by sending us an email (hi@mlai.au) and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Do I need prior experience in AI or healthcare?
Not at all! We have a beginner track specifically designed for newcomers. Plus, mentors and workshops will get you up to speed.
Can I form a team beforehand?
Absolutely. We encourage participants to pre-form teams at the team formation events. Solo attendees can also join teams on the first day of the hackathon.
Is the data real and safe to use?
Yes, all real data is fully de-identified and complies with strict privacy regulations. For the beginner track, simulated data ensures a safe learning environment.
Are there prizes?
Yes, winning teams (decided at the Pitch Night) will receive exciting prizes. More details to be announced!
Will there be food and drinks?
Yes, meals and refreshments will be provided during the main hack day and optional hacking days.
How many people on a team?
Teams can be a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 5 members. We encourage participants to form teams of 5 unless you're mega geniuses.
Can one of my team members or I join online?
There isn’t an online component for this hackathon and the event won’t be live streamed or broadcast. We recommend you attend in person as it’s a lot more fun that way. However, if you can’t make the event in person, as long as you have a team member that CAN attend in person and register your team, you can participate online as long as everybody on your team has a ticket.
Do I need to show up for all three days?
Nope! The first day, Saturday the 15th Feb 2025 is mandatory for registration and orientation. However Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th are optional. We've reserved a space for you and your team and will be providing extra guidance, food, drink and activities on these days to help teams perform.
How do you select the winners?
For the beginner track, the team that has the highest amount of points at the end of the competition will be declared the winners. For the advanced track, teams will submit a short video pitch before Friday the 21st Feb 2025. This video pitch will be assessed by a team of judges and the most promising teams will be selected to pitch at the Pitch Night on the 1st March 2025, where the final winners will be selected.
What's the Pitch Night?
For the teams in the advanced track that make it through the semi-finals, we'll invite you to pitch your awesome solutions to a panel of judges and investors and a huge crowd of people! Yayyyy! This is an essential part of being a founder and we'll coach you through the process and teach you how to pitch if you don't know already.
What are the Team Formation Events?
It can really suck when you join a hackathon, but your team members ghost or you just don't click. On the other hand, if you do click and work together to create something meaningful that you're proud of, that's magic. So we're planning on having one or two pre-hackathon events to help participants meet each other and form tight-knit teams.
